Ron Paul Endorsed By Jane Roe...You Know, The Roe V. Wade One
Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008
Alright, we gave you two Clinton/Obama stories in a row recently, so no complaining about there being two Ron Paul stories today! If you don’t know who Jane Roe is - real name Norma McCorvey - you need to go back to history class. On this 35th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade ruling, which federally ruled that abortions are permissible for any reason a woman chooses up until the point at which a fetus could live on its own outside a mother’s womb, Jane Roe is speaking out: to endorse presidential candidate Ron Paul.
“I support Ron Paul for President because we share the same goal, that of overturning Roe v. Wade. He has never wavered…he understands the importance of civil liberties for all, including the unborn.”
But before you go getting all up in arms: although Ron Paul considers himself ”strongly pro life,” he consistently adds that he wants Roe vs. Wade to be overturned for an entirely different reason - he doesn’t think it’s the federal government’s business.
“I do not believe this should be a federal matter,” Paul has said. “All issues of life and violence and crime and murder are dealt with at the local level.”
“This is a practical, direct approach to ending federal court tyranny which threatens our constitutional republic.”
So why should abortion be up to the states? Well, in my humble opinion, for the same reason that smoking bans or privileges are left up to the states, and for the same reason it is not illegal in all states to walk down a main street with your shoes untied, as it is in Fort Qu’Appelle.
It is a little thing called the Constitution - and though Bush may consider it just a “piece of paper,” many of us are wise enough to respect the fairness with which it was created. Without the Constitution, the people and our states would not have the rights to create laws as we see fit.
“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” -The Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution
I have always considered myself pro-choice. But that goes hand-in-hand with my desire to maintain the right to vote for what I believe in, in the state in which I live.
Wouldn’t you like to have a say?
